How to Choose a Birth Photographer: 9 Questions to Ask Before You Book

When you choose a birth photographer, you are not just picking a style. You are choosing the person who will be in the room on one of the most important days of your life. So the right questions matter as much as the portfolio.

This guide lists the nine questions we suggest every family ask. We answer each one for our own studio, so you can see what a clear answer looks like. Then you can compare any birth photographer side by side.

Choose a birth photographer early, then pack a hospital bag with the first photos in mind
A few small items in your hospital bag make a real difference in the first photos.

1. When does on-call coverage start?

Babies rarely arrive on their due date. That is why on-call coverage is the first thing to check. We are on call 24/7 from 38 weeks until your baby arrives, day or night.

Ask how the photographer handles early labor, too. For example, we stay in close contact as labor progresses. Then we use your care provider’s guidance to time our arrival during active labor.

2. Is there a backup birth photographer?

Two births can happen on the same night. Illness can happen too. Therefore, a backup plan is essential when you choose a birth photographer.

We keep a trusted, experienced backup from our team on standby. Even when they step in, we still edit your gallery personally.

3. What happens if the birth photographer misses the birth?

Very fast labors and emergencies do happen. A good studio has a written answer for this. Ours is simple: if a birth is missed entirely, you receive immediate postpartum coverage, a complimentary Fresh 48 session, or a reshoot credit toward another session.

4. How does the photographer work in the room?

Birth is not a photo shoot. Instead, the best birth photography is documentary: nothing posed, nothing directed. We work in the background, often in low light and without flash if you prefer. Most families say they forget we are there.

Ask how the photographer works with your care team as well. We move around midwives, doulas, nurses, and doctors with ease. In addition, we follow each facility’s photo and video rules.

5. Which birth settings do they cover?

Some photographers only work in one setting. So confirm that they are comfortable where you plan to give birth. We document hospital births, birth center births, and home births. We also help you understand your hospital’s policy well before your due date.

6. How many photos do you get, and when?

Ask for exact numbers and timelines. Here are ours:

  • Sneak-peek images within about 48 hours
  • A full hand-edited gallery in four to six weeks
  • 50+, 75+, or 100+ edited images, depending on the collection
  • A private online gallery with a full print release

7. Is birth film available?

Photos cannot keep the sound of that first cry. So ask whether film is offered, and whether the same team films and edits it. Our film collections include a three to four minute cinematic film, or a six to eight minute full film. You can read more in our birth videography guide.

8. How is your privacy protected?

Your birth story is yours. When you choose a birth photographer, ask in writing how your images may be used. We never share images or film publicly without your explicit written permission. Also, galleries are private and password protected.

9. What does it cost, and how do payments work?

Finally, ask for the full price and the payment schedule. Our collections are $1,650 for photography, $2,950 for photography with film, and $4,200 for the Legacy Collection. A $500 retainer reserves your date, and the balance is split into monthly payments through 37 weeks. Our birth photography cost guide explains what each price includes.

As early as possible. Many families book in the second trimester, because experienced birth photographers take only a few births each month.

What should I ask a birth photographer before booking?

Ask about on-call coverage, backup photographers, what happens if the birth is missed, delivery times, privacy, and whether film is available.

We work with available light and are equipped to shoot in very low light without flash. If you prefer no flash at all, we honor that.
